Everyone talks about AI as intelligence. I think it’s more useful to think about it as navigation.
A GPS doesn’t choose your destination. A compass doesn’t decide which mountain to climb. Navigation simply helps you move with greater speed and confidence toward wherever you’ve decided to go.
AI works much the same way. It doesn’t wake up wanting power. It doesn’t care about fairness.
AI doesn’t decide what matters. People do.
Every AI system has an invisible definition of success. Sometimes it’s engagement. Sometimes it’s profit. Sometimes it’s efficiency. Sometimes it’s learning.
The software simply becomes better at producing whatever outcome we’ve rewarded. AI doesn’t decide success. We already did.
Imagine two schools using the exact same AI.

One uses it to eliminate administrative work so teachers spend more time mentoring students.

Another uses it to increase class sizes and reduce staffing costs.
Same technology. Different destination. Now imagine two hospitals, two governments or two employers.
AI didn’t make those choices. Leadership did.
Technology scales decisions. Leadership determines which decisions are worth scaling.
We often mistake speed for progress. They aren’t the same thing. People celebrate speed.
But speed has never been the problem. Navigation has. No one brags about taking the wrong road faster.
Yet that’s exactly what happens when organizations optimize efficiency without asking what they’re trying to achieve. AI magnifies direction.

Good direction becomes extraordinary.

Poor direction becomes expensive.
Maybe the question isn’t “Will AI change humanity?”
Maybe the better question is “What are we asking AI to help us become?” Because AI doesn’t choose our future. It follows us into it.
Technology has always reflected humanity. AI simply does it with unprecedented speed, scale, and consistency.
The future won’t be defined by the intelligence we build. It will be defined by the wisdom that guides it.
Because the greatest risk isn’t that AI becomes more powerful.
It’s that we become less intentional about where we’re asking it to take us.
